The text message came that morning two years ago. Tzu Zoo Rescue needed a foster for a few days for 12-year-old Molly, whose "Mama" had been taken to a memory care center.
There had been Molly and Abby to begin with. Advertised on Craig's List by the owner's family, Abby found whatever person wanted her regardless of their motive, but Molly was passed over because she was "too old and too fat".
She really was fat! Her belly almost drug the ground. But, she was so calm, so accepting. And her love was so unconditional, as we soon learned.
During the first couple of weeks, we discovered Molly was too fat to fit through the doggie door, but she would sit by the back yard door patiently until someone noticed she needed to go outside.
Molly loved her five doggy buddies and she adored us. As senior citizens and having lost four dogs before Molly left us, we had a certain respect for Molly's age and the short time she would probably be with us. We just determined to make the rest of her life as happy and comfortable as we could.
Molly left us so kindly, so gently. She laid down in the floor in her usual spot one Saturday afternoon as we all watched TV, just in the same manner as any other day. My husband suddenly said, "I think Molly just died." I looked at her still form and knew. Just as she never gave us cause to be sorry we had adopted her, she left in her usual unassuming way.
We had Molly for 2 years, give or take a couple of days.
I hope at Rainbow Bridge I will be the Mommy Molly is waiting for. If not, I will know she is reunited with the poor mommy she had before Alzheimer's separated them.
I love you, still, sweet Molly.
